The Daily Rundown – September 2: Romo Owns It, Schedules the Booth

7:33 listen. Two hosts, three stories, one running scoreboard.

The Ledger: RY 23-10 | Rylie 20-13

Read the transcript

RY: Romo hits a point-one-five and still tries to schedule his CBS return the same day.

RYLIE: Wait, what?

RY: Same day as the plea. No contest. Then the Instagram essay.

RYLIE: We’ve got Romo owning an OWI while soft-landing the booth, Notre Dame as BetMGM’s biggest title liability, and Tacko Fall turning Sixers camp into actual Embiid math.

RY: I believe the pain pipeline.

RYLIE: Of course you do.

RY: Multiple back surgeries. Constant pain. Meds. Then alcohol. Football chews bodies up and spits them out.

RYLIE: Hold on.

RY: What.

RYLIE: He told deputies zero drinks.

RY: I know.

RYLIE: Zero. Lawyer on loop. Refused the breath test. Glassy eyes. Odor. Then the number lands at point-one-five.

RY: Nearly twice the limit.

RYLIE: That gap is the whole story.

RY: He wrote I own this completely.

RYLIE: [scoffs]

RY: He did.

RYLIE: He owns everything except the timeline back to the lead booth.

RY: Come on.

RYLIE: No.

RY: The man taught his three young sons to stand up when you fall short. That line hit me.

RYLIE: Cute line. Bad clock management.

RY: You want him in exile forever?

RYLIE: I want recovery work before a microphone.

RY: And I—

RYLIE: Not a carefully coached closing argument aimed straight at CBS.

RY: That’s fair.

RYLIE: Thank you.

RY: I still trust the toughness I watched in Dallas.

RYLIE: Toughness is not the question.

RY: Then what is?

RYLIE: Whether owning it means controlling the next chapter on your timetable.

RY: He pleaded. First offense. Milwaukee County. He did not hide.

RYLIE: Bodycam already showed the hide.

RY: [exhales]

RYLIE: Denial first. Number second. Statement third. Soft landing fourth.

RY: I hear you, but pain-to-pills-to-alcohol is real in that league.

RYLIE: Pipeline can be real and the rush back can still be wrong.

RY: So he sits.

RYLIE: He sits until the work is boring and quiet, not content.

RY: You would bury the best booth voice in football.

RYLIE: I would make him earn the chair again.

RY: Ha!

RYLIE: What.

RY: You sound like a league office.

RYLIE: You sound like a friend group chat.

RY: Guilty.

RYLIE: Dumb-smart question time. Why does the booth even matter in the apology?

RY: Because if he names CBS in the same breath as ownership, he is already negotiating the comeback, not just confessing the crash.

RYLIE: Exactly.

RY: Still gut says he climbs back.

RYLIE: Gut is not a recovery plan.

RY: Moving on before I defend another statement.

RYLIE: Please.

RY: Notre Dame is getting hammered like a sure thing and I am all the way in.

RYLIE: Nope.

RY: Opened plus-seven hundred. Now plus-six fifty. Public money pouring in.

RYLIE: That is the problem.

RY: Eighteen point five percent of the tickets. Highest share in the market.

RYLIE: Eighteen point one of the handle too.

RY: They look like a title club to me.

RYLIE: [laughs]

RY: Brand. Talent. Runway.

RYLIE: Soft runway.

RY: Say it.

RYLIE: Wisconsin at Lambeau as heavy favorites, then Rice, Michigan State, Purdue, North Carolina, Stanford.

RY: And?

RYLIE: That slate pads a résumé. It does not stress-test a contender.

RY: They still have to win the games.

RYLIE: Winning those games proves a logo more than a gauntlet.

RY: BetMGM is sweating them. That means the Irish are live.

RYLIE: Listen to the book.

RY: I am.

RYLIE: Seamus Magee said Notre Dame is the most bet and the biggest liability. Ohio State is the best outcome for the book among the favorites.

RY: So fade the public.

RYLIE: Yes. Clear tier is Notre Dame, Texas, Ohio State, Georgia. Public crushes the Irish. Book prays for Buckeyes.

RY: I am the public here.

RYLIE: I noticed.

RY: Last year snub still fuels this. People want the correction.

RYLIE: Emotion is not a price.

RY: My eyes say championship ceiling.

RYLIE: My sheet says liability pile-on.

RY: I hear you, but a national book calling them the biggest liability is respect.

RYLIE: It is a warning label.

RY: You fading straight up.

RYLIE: Fading the bandwagon. Not shocked if they look pretty in September.

RY: And then?

RYLIE: Then January asks harder questions than Rice does.

RY: Brutal.

RYLIE: Accurate.

RY: I am still riding the Irish vibe.

RYLIE: Keep the receipt.

RY: Oh I will—

RYLIE: And I will read it back in January.

RY: Deal.

RYLIE: Deal.

RY: Curveball. Tacko Fall. Seven-foot-six. Thirty years old. Exhibit 10 in Philly and I am not laughing.

RYLIE: You never laugh at big men.

RY: Jaylen Brown dropped a goat emoji. That is not random.

RYLIE: Says who?

RY: Says a former Boston teammate who knows the tourist attraction still blocks shots.

RYLIE: Last NBA minutes were twenty twenty-one twenty-two with Cleveland.

RY: Then he worked.

RYLIE: China. New Zealand. Ningbo. Wherever the rim was tall enough.

RY: Roughly eleven points, seven boards, two blocks in about eighteen minutes abroad.

RYLIE: Celebrity Game he goes twenty, twenty-one, and five blocks.

RY: Gravity took the night off.

RYLIE: [sighs]

RY: You see a meme.

RYLIE: I see paperwork that usually dies in a press release.

RY: Alongside Jameer Nelson Jr. and Saint Thomas. Open two-way math. Embiid minutes always need a giant behind them.

RYLIE: I hear you, but camp comedy becomes roster real only if the body holds.

RY: Brown did not post goat by accident.

RYLIE: One emoji is not a scouting report.

RY: Fall called it an opportunity of a lifetime he shall not waste.

RYLIE: Good quote. Still an Exhibit 10.

RY: Stack that roster picture and try not to run the minutes.

RYLIE: I ran them. Novelty until the load management hits.

RY: Then suddenly the giant is—

RYLIE: Useful. Fine. Useful.

RY: Concession accepted.

RYLIE: Narrow one.

RY: I will take it.

RYLIE: Ledger time.

RY: Yesterday I took Philly over Arizona and they stomped them seven to one.

RYLIE: Clean.

RY: I am rolling. Twenty-four and ten.

RYLIE: I took Milwaukee over Chicago and the Brewers dropped nine to four on them.

RY: Also clean.

RYLIE: Twenty-one and thirteen. Both cashed. No loser excuse today, just me noting your lead is loud and annoying.

RY: [laughs] Say it nicer.

RYLIE: No.

RY: Fresh pick. Give me NYY over LAA.

RYLIE: Give me SD over CIN.

RY: Yankees get the job done out west.

RYLIE: Padres look sharper to me on the road there.

RY: Tomorrow we chase whether Romo’s quiet work actually starts and if USC’s empty-seat fight keeps spilling.

RY: That’s the Rundown. Same time tomorrow — bring your takes.
