The Daily Rundown – September 12: Kansas Tape, Larkin’s C, Stadium Boos

5:59 listen. Two hosts, three stories, one running scoreboard.

The Ledger: RY 29-13 | Rylie 26-16

Read the transcript

RY: Kansas dropped a minute-twenty-nine Civil War villain reel on Missouri, slapped “It is that deep” on it, then lost 38-21 in Lawrence on the anniversary of September 11.

RYLIE: Wait, what?

RY: Thirty-two million people watched that self-own by zeroes.

RYLIE: Border War morality play, Detroit ripping the C off Larkin after the trade ask, and Yankee Stadium booing a timed flag stunt clean off the grass.

RY: That sequence is the whole story.

RYLIE: The tape or the scoreboard?

RY: Both. They ran heroes-and-villains narration on Thursday, then did a moment of silence and a military flyover for the nearly three thousand dead, then kicked it on Friday and got punched in the mouth.

RYLIE: Okay.

RY: Gilbert Brown did not blink. Love doesn’t exist here. Neither does mercy. Roots back to the Civil War. There’s right and wrong. There’s Kansas and Missouri.

RYLIE: [scoffs]

RYLIE: And Missouri just… won football.

RY: Fifth straight in the series. Drinkwitz stood there and said he doesn’t really care if the rivalry continues.

RYLIE: He said that out loud?

RY: Full volume. If they’re going to be weird about it, what’s the point.

RYLIE: I hear you, but the tape did not hang thirty-eight points on Kansas.

RY: Come on.

RYLIE: It didn’t.

RY: It handed Drinkwitz the high ground before the coin toss even happened.

RYLIE: High ground doesn’t cover kicks.

RY: No, but it turns a border game into a referendum on taste, and once you do that you better win.

RYLIE: They didn’t.

RY: Exactly. Sellout in Lawrence. National eyes. And the visitors walk out with the W and the quote that’ll live forever.

RYLIE: So your bold call is kill the rivalry?

RY: My bold call is Kansas lit a fuse they couldn’t stamp out, and Missouri poured water on it with pads.

RYLIE: That’s fair.

RY: You don’t dress the other locker room as villains on that weekend and then play soft after the flyover.

RYLIE: Soft is a feel word.

RY: Thirty-eight to twenty-one is not a feel word.

RYLIE: [laughs]

RYLIE: Fine. Scoreboard wins. Still think the morality play is louder than the tackling though.

RY: That’s why you’re you.

RYLIE: And why Drinkwitz took the gift.

RY: He didn’t need a speechwriter. Just a microphone and a fifth straight win.

RYLIE: Moving on before you rewatch the tape a third time.

RY: I might.

RY: Detroit stripped Dylan Larkin of the captaincy ahead of camp.

RYLIE: Because he asked out.

RY: Because once that call hits the GM’s phone, you protect the room or you fold. They protected the room.

RYLIE: Yzerman put it on record.

RY: Shortly after the season, agent calls, Dylan wants a trade. Week later, short list he’d waive the no-trade for.

RYLIE: Florida. Minnesota. Vegas.

RY: Those leaked. None of them is “trust the process in Detroit.”

RYLIE: He’s tenth in franchise history in points.

RY: Six hundred forty-three in eight hundred eight games. Career-high thirty-four goals last year. Olympic gold. Grew up in Michigan.

RYLIE: None of that buys the C after a trade request.

RY: Says who?

RYLIE: Says every locker room that’s ever had a letter.

RY: I get the math. I do. Ten straight seasons out of the playoffs and the captain hands you an exit list–

RYLIE: Then Yzerman steps down in mid-July.

RY: Rebuild claimed the architect too.

RYLIE: So who’s the villain here?

RY: The years. The empty springs. Not just Larkin.

RYLIE: [exhales]

RYLIE: I hear the hometown-kid tragedy, but you cannot wear the C and shop Florida-Minnesota-Vegas.

RY: Watch me disagree.

RYLIE: Ha!

RY: He gave them a decade of grind through a rebuild that never hit a series. Asking out doesn’t erase that body of work overnight.

RYLIE: It erases the letter.

RY: Maybe.

RYLIE: Not maybe. They already took it.

RY: Camp opens with no captain and a star who wants a plane ticket. That’s a cold rink.

RYLIE: Colder if they pretended the ask never happened.

RY: I’ll give you that much.

RYLIE: Dumb-smart question time. What does a short list even do if the GM makes no guarantees?

RY: It tells the whole league where his head is and forces Detroit to either deal from weakness or play a lame-duck star under someone else’s letter.

RYLIE: Ugly either way.

RY: Ugly is the word.

RYLIE: Curveball. Yankee Stadium. Clock hits 9:11 p.m. on the twenty-fifth anniversary.

RY: Don’t.

RYLIE: Man in a No Kings jersey hits the grass with a Palestinian flag during a Subway Series memorial night.

RY: Bases loaded. Lindor in the box.

RYLIE: Biggest pitch of the night turned into a security tackle.

RY: Fans threw beer cans. Then the boos. Then USA chants through forty-seven thousand four hundred ten people.

RYLIE: The building answered.

RY: Yankees declined comment. Didn’t need one.

RYLIE: Andy Green had it right before first pitch. Special night. Emotions. Pain. Two New York teams on that date.

RY: Invader understood a different assignment.

RYLIE: I hear the free-speech shrug coming–

RY: No shrug. You don’t time a field invasion to 9:11 on that anniversary and act shocked when the stadium refuses to mute itself.

RYLIE: Agreed, mostly.

RY: Mostly?

RYLIE: The delay is indefensible. The chants were the cleanest part of the clip.

RY: Security needed a few seconds. Felt longer.

RYLIE: Headrick throwing warm-ups with the whole night sideways.

RY: Nope.

RY: Not on that lawn. Not that night.

RYLIE: Ledger.

RY: Oh I already smiled.

RYLIE: [sighs]

RY: I took NYY over the Mets. Final four-six, Yankees. Cash it.

RYLIE: I took PHI at Atlanta. Phillies five, Braves six. Step on a rake.

RY: One excuse. Go.

RYLIE: Bullpen chess in the late innings went sideways and I still trusted the road bats one night too long.

RY: Running records. I sit twenty-nine thirteen. You’re twenty-six sixteen.

RYLIE: Don’t gloat in three different keys.

RY: That’s one key.

RYLIE: Today I’m taking TOR. Give me TOR over BAL.

RY: Give me NYY over NYM. Again. Home digs. Same energy.

RYLIE: Tomorrow we dig into whether Michigan’s title defense survives a full year without McCoy after the ACL repair, and if the Forty-Niners’ Australia thrashing actually flipped the NFC West temperature.

RY: That’s the Rundown. Same time tomorrow — bring your takes.
