The Daily Rundown – August 24: Clark Birdies Three and Shames the Board

6:44 listen. Two hosts, three stories, one running scoreboard.

The Ledger: RY 19-6 | Rylie 16-9

Read the transcript

RY: Wyndham Clark birdied sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen, banked the three-shot win and three point six million, and the market still treats him like a parking-lot thief.

RYLIE: Wait, what?

RY: You heard me.

RYLIE: Clark proving the board wrong again, Kiffin yanking a Browns tight end back to LSU, and Watson calling thirty-six yards of boos personal—that’s the pile.

RY: Start with Clark because I am done pretending this is a fluke season.

RYLIE: Three wins.

RY: CJ Cup Byron Nelson, the U.S. Open, now the BMW. Sixth career title. Automatic Presidents Cup berth. And every gallery still roots for the other guy.

RYLIE: He opened 64-64-65.

RY: Sat on seventeen-under with five shots of cushion.

RYLIE: Then Sunday got sloppy.

RY: Rory erased the whole lead by the eleventh and the board smelled blood. Bettors started counting money that never showed.

RYLIE: Exactly.

RY: No—not exactly. Clark waited. McIlroy got level. Could not get ahead. Then the birdie run on the only stretch that mattered and an even-par seventy closes it.

RYLIE: [scoffs] Surviving is not dominating.

RY: Winning is winning.

RYLIE: I hear you, but a five-shot cushion turning into a dogfight is volatility the market is allowed to price. He made dumb bogeys early and went birdie-free forever before that finish.

RY: And still left Missouri at seventeen-under.

RYLIE: True.

RY: He said it flat—I’m one of the best players in the world. Everyone gives me a hard time and roots for other people. Best season yet coming off his worst year. I believed him more than the odds ever will.

RYLIE: Tour Championship at East Lake next.

RY: And if the board keeps shading him like a one-hit wonder after three wins in one season I will—

RYLIE: You will what, bet the house?

RY: I will keep hammering the same take until they catch up.

RYLIE: Ha!

RY: Laugh. He made Rory pay for getting greedy on the charge. That is a closer, not a tourist.

RYLIE: I will give you the closing stretch. I will not give you ironclad elite until the cushion stops melting every Sunday.

RY: Fair enough. Still taking him seriously from here on.

RYLIE: Moving on before you propose to his putter.

RY: Kiffin actually dialed Todd Monken.

RYLIE: And Monken never called back.

RY: That unanswered tag just rewrote the tight end market. Dae’Quan Wright is getting waived by the Browns so he can chase an LSU jersey for 2026 if he clears.

RYLIE: First UDFA ever?

RY: Believed to be the first to line up a college return after signing an NFL deal as an undrafted free agent. Agents put it on the record.

RYLIE: Hold on.

RY: What?

RYLIE: He signed with the Eagles after the draft, got cut, landed in Cleveland on August 11, never appeared in either of the first two preseason games, missed more than a week of practice, dressed for the Bills game Saturday, zero snaps.

RY: And already had the Louisiana TRO in his pocket.

RYLIE: So the league was a layover.

RY: Plane pointed straight back to Baton Rouge. Kiffin wants him. Agreement already in place. That is bold and I love it.

RYLIE: [laughs] Of course you do.

RY: An active NFL body treating the roster like a temporary bus stop? Every GM should be sweating.

RYLIE: I hear the chaos appeal, but this is a two-way street that can blow up roster rules overnight. He hit the transfer portal while still on an NFL roster.

RY: That sentence alone.

RYLIE: Yes. And Monken ghosting the call was the tell—he knew.

RY: Kiffin saw a loose end and yanked it. LSU gets a body the Browns clearly were not using.

RYLIE: Says who?

RY: The snap count. Zero.

RYLIE: Still feels like the boundary between the league and campus just got thinner than it should.

RY: Or the boundary was fake and somebody finally walked through it.

RYLIE: Dumb-smart question time—can any undrafted guy just bounce back to college if a judge stamps a TRO?

RY: Right now if the state court and the school both say yes, apparently the Browns become a layover terminal.

RYLIE: Wild.

RY: My kind of wild.

RYLIE: Yours always is.

RY: Watson next because that presser was a master class in mirror avoidance.

RYLIE: Five completions.

RY: Thirty-six yards. One pick. Four drives of nothing in a 31-7 preseason loss to the Bills. First home look since the Achilles in October 2024.

RYLIE: Fourteen point six passer rating.

RY: And he hits the podium blaming the crowd for being disrespectful and personal.

RYLIE: Come on.

RY: He went straight to the wound—last time on that field he tore the Achilles and claims that same fan base cheered the injury.

RYLIE: If they cheered an injury, ugly. Full stop.

RY: I will not dress that up. I also will not let him use one rotten night in 2024 as cover for another empty night in 2026.

RYLIE: [exhales] Performance is exactly what it had to do with.

RY: Thank you.

RYLIE: I hear the scar, but you do not take the biggest check in franchise history, miss time, return looking like a backup, then lecture the building about respect.

RY: Half-full building booed the intro and kept booing the incompletions. That is the deal he signed up for.

RYLIE: Starting job just got simpler for the coaches without them saying a word.

RY: He made the choice easy.

RYLIE: Nope.

RY: What?

RYLIE: Not easy. Messy. Expensive. Public. But the tape is the tape and thirty-six yards is not a narrative problem.

RY: It is a football problem.

RYLIE: Finally.

RY: Ledger time. Both of us cashed yesterday which almost never happens and I am still taking the podium.

RYLIE: [laughs] Share it.

RY: I took LAD over PIT and they punched a 4-0 clean win. That moves me to twenty and six.

RYLIE: I had PHI over STL and they closed 6-4. Seventeen and nine for me. No excuse card today—just a clean card.

RY: Look at us. Responsible adults.

RYLIE: Do not get used to it.

RY: Fresh ones. Give me PHI over SEA.

RYLIE: Give me CHC over ARI.

RY: Phillies travel better than that Seattle rotation right now—gut feel.

RYLIE: Cubs side for me because Arizona has been giving free bases and I am done ignoring it.

RY: Tomorrow we dig into whoever survives the waiver wire chaos and whether East Lake finally prices Clark like a real threat.

RY: That’s the Rundown. Same time tomorrow — bring your takes.
