The Rams sat on a 16-0 lead at halftime on Sunday Night Football, then watched it evaporate into a 30-26 loss that dropped them to 1-2. Denver scored every one of its points after the break. Bo Nix snuck in from a yard out with 47 seconds left. Talanoa Hufanga sealed it with a second interception as time expired. And the Super Bowl odds board still has Los Angeles perched at +650 like nothing happened.
That price is an act of negligence. The books are protecting a brand instead of pricing a collapse.
Sean McVay just suffered a 16-point blown lead that ties for the third-largest of his head-coaching career. Matthew Stafford threw for 390 yards on 30-of-55 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. One of those picks went 66 yards the other way for a touchdown. The Rams outscored the Broncos 16-0 before halftime and got outscored 30-10 after it. Puka Nacua sat with a hip injury. Myles Garrett is already shelved. The supporting cast still could not finish a game they controlled for two quarters in Denver.
I am planting a flag right here. The market is wrong to keep the Rams as the favorite, and the Broncos at +2000 are the only honest ticket left on that board after what just happened at Mile High.
The Second-Half Machine Just Took Another Receipt
Denver walked into the locker room down 16-0 and booed off its own field. Then the Broncos did what they have made a habit of doing. They scored 30 points in the final stretch of game time and improved to 2-1. This was their second straight second-half comeback win. Since the start of last season they lead the league in comeback victories and second-half comebacks. That is not luck. That is identity.
Bo Nix went 17-of-34 for 186 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, plus the game-winning sneak. He threw a pair of successful two-point conversions in the third quarter alone to erase the deficit. In the huddle the belief never left. “In the huddle we feel a lot of belief that we’ve been there before and we have what it takes to go down against a really good defense and score points,” Nix said afterward. He also said the group knew it was just a two-score game. That is the language of a quarterback who has already lived through the hole and climbed out.
Sean Payton called it a gutsy win. He was right. The slow starts remain a problem he himself labeled the six-million-dollar question. But the finish is no longer a question. Denver keeps answering it.
Hufanga Delivered the Exhibit That Should Move the Line
Talanoa Hufanga dropped two potential interceptions early and gave himself a pep talk on the spot. “I actually had to have a pep talk with myself,” he said. “It was just, ‘Don’t be that guy. Make the plays when they come.’ But this team is incredible. No matter what you’re going through, this team rises.” He rose. Two interceptions. One returned for a touchdown that flipped a 19-16 deficit into a 23-19 lead. The other killed the Rams’ final drive in the end zone.
On the pick-six he even gave Stafford his flowers for speed. “To be honest, Matt Stafford is a lot faster than you think,” Hufanga said. “I might be slow, but he’s fast. I’ll give him his credit because I had to cut back on that play.” That interception was Stafford’s 33rd career pick-six, the most in NFL history. Payton handed Hufanga the game ball and called him a consistent performer and leader. The tape backs every word.
When a safety rewrites the fourth quarter like that against a quarterback throwing 55 times, the Super Bowl price on the other side should move. It did not. The Rams stayed at +650. Denver sat at +2000. The gap is the entire argument.
Fade the Favorite, Pound the Climb
The Bills sit at +700 after starting 3-0. The Ravens and 49ers are +900. Seattle is +1000. Kansas City is +1100. All of them have cleaner recent resumes than a Rams team that just wasted a 16-0 cushion on the road without its top receiver. Los Angeles still gets the benefit of the doubt because Nacua and Garrett are expected back. That is future talk. The present is a 1-2 record and a historic blown lead under McVay.
I am taking the Broncos at +2000 to win Super Bowl LXI. The number is too fat for a team that just erased 16 points against a supposed contender and owns the league’s best comeback profile. The Rams can climb back into the conversation when the bodies return and the finishes improve. Until then their +650 is a soft spot on the board, and Denver’s price is the correction waiting to happen.
Nix keeps finding ways. Hufanga keeps making the plays. Payton keeps getting the late answers. The books can keep the Rams on the throne if they want. I am betting the team that just proved it can climb out of a grave in prime time.
