The books hung Patrick Mahomes at 2.5 points and a 231.5 passing line for his first start in nine months, and half the sports internet is treating that like free money on the logo. I am not. I am taking the Broncos plus the number and fading the yards prop before the national anthem hits Arrowhead.
Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL on December 14 against the Chargers, got fixed the next day in Dallas, and told Andy Reid on the spot he was coming back for Week 1. Reid remembered it clean: “He goes, ‘I’m coming back (for Week 1),’ … There was no hesitation.” Mahomes hit the goal. Cleared. Full reps. No designation. Brace on the leg and equal strength reported in both. The rehab is real. The narrative around it is still cooked.
The Spread Is Selling a Ghost Story
Chiefs minus 2.5 at home on Monday night feels like the softest number of Week 1. Public money loves the return arc. ESPN panels are already glazing the “he’s back stronger” montage. I keep coming back to the actual recent tape against this defense.
Denver won the last three meetings. Under Vance Joseph the last four, Mahomes put up three touchdowns, four interceptions, a 67 percent clip, roughly 272 yards a game and an 81.2 passer rating while the Chiefs averaged under 16 points. That is not rust. That is a defense that already had the answers when Mahomes was healthy.
The 2025 Broncos ranked seventh in EPA per play and allowed 18.3 points per game. They led the league in sacks in some tallies. Bo Nix is coming off his own offseason work and Davis Webb is the new play-caller, but the front seven did not forget how to get home. Josh Simmons is limited or out on the Chiefs’ left side. Kenneth Walker helps the run game and Eric Bieniemy is back calling plays, yet none of that erases what Denver just did to this offense three straight times.
I know the reply-guy script. Career Week 1 Mahomes averages 290 yards, 68 percent, six-and-two with 22 touchdowns and two picks. Three of the twenty highest Week 1 passer ratings in thirty years. Fine. That was against softer September defenses and a healthier supporting cast. This is a top-shelf Broncos unit that already owns the recent series and a Chiefs team that finished 6-11 overall.
Reid said everything looks normal besides the brace and Mahomes is “running around the same way he’s always done.” I believe the medicals. I do not believe a two-and-a-half-point home favorite is enough juice against a defense that just buried them repeatedly.
The Props Are Even More Generous
Mahomes’ passing line is floating between 223.5 and 231.5 depending on the book. Career he clears 232 yards in 115 of 147 games. The under still looks right to me here. Pass attempts at 32.5 and touchdowns at 1.5 feel like traps too. The Broncos will sit in coverage, force checkdowns, and dare the post-surgery legs to create something off-script.
Rushing yards at 14.5 is the one number I will leave alone. He wore the brace all camp and the reports say equal strength, but I am not inventing hero scrambles on night one against a sack-happy front. Mahomes himself said the goal was always Week 1 and “now I get to go out there and play the sport that I love.” Great. Love does not move the line. Matchup history does.
Brett Veach called the rehab “incredible” and said Mahomes defines leadership and the face of a franchise. Correct. Leadership does not cover 2.5 against a defense that already solved him. The market is pricing the story. I am pricing the last three box scores and a Broncos unit that finished top-five in points allowed.
Chiefs moneyline around minus 140 is even worse value. Give me the points. Give me the under on 231.5. The return is legitimate. The spread is still a gift.
Monday night at Arrowhead is going to be loud and emotional and full of “he’s back” graphics. I will be cashing the dog and the under while the highlight packages roll. Denver already proved it can slow this version of Mahomes. The books just forgot to charge for the memory.
