Ole Miss Hits No. 4 as SEC Parks 10 Teams in AP Poll

Ole Miss Hits No. 4 as SEC Parks 10 Teams in AP Poll AI-generated image

Ole Miss vaulted to No. 4 after beating LSU as the SEC landed 10 ranked teams. Chambliss and Golding’s response show why the conference floor keeps rising.

The AP poll just handed Ole Miss its first top-five slot since last season’s final ranking, and the Southeastern Conference walked away with ten teams on the board. That is not noise. That is the product.

Texas stayed at No. 1 after putting UTSA away 30-6. Georgia held No. 2. Notre Dame sat at No. 3. Then the Rebels, fresh off a 32-24 win over LSU in Oxford, vaulted from No. 8 to No. 4 with three first-place votes. Indiana rounded out the top five. LSU slid three spots to No. 10. The numbers are clean and the conference math is louder: seventh time in poll history the SEC has parked at least ten teams in a regular-season Top 25.

Trinidad Chambliss put 363 yards and two touchdowns through the air on 33-of-48 throwing, then finished the night himself with a 14-yard touchdown run before a successful two-point conversion made it 32-24. LSU had clawed back from a 24-7 halftime hole to tie it early in the fourth. Chambliss answered. When Sam Leavitt drove the Tigers to the six, the fourth-down throw got tipped off Kam Franklin’s helmet and Jaylon Braxton sealed it in the end zone. Ole Miss finished with 426 total yards and five-for-five in the red zone. Those are the receipts the voters used.

Kiffin Named the Problem Before the Snap

Lane Kiffin spent the week dreading exactly that sequence. “That’s what all week my biggest fear every minute was, when the game is at the end and Trinidad has the ball in his hand,” he said afterward. He went further: “He’s the hardest player to play in America. He showed up great today.” And again: “He’s the most dynamic player in college football, and he finished last year that way.” Kiffin left Oxford for Baton Rouge after the 2025 regular season. Pete Golding, the former defensive coordinator, is running the show now in his first full season. The handoff did not soft-pedal the offense.

Golding refused to treat the Magnolia Bowl like a finish line. “I don’t think anybody came here to beat LSU. That’s not what our goal was coming in and working so hard in the offseason this summer. It wasn’t just to win one football game. … It wasn’t the Super Bowl, and we didn’t make it to be the Super Bowl.” He also put the quarterback’s value in one clean line: “As long as the ball’s in No. 6’s hands, we’re good.” Kewan Lacy exited with a left shoulder injury after nine carries for 43 yards and a score; X-rays came back negative, but the next test is already on the calendar.

Ole Miss travels to No. 21 Florida. The Gators cracked the poll after a 44-39 road win at Auburn and sit 3-0 under Jon Sumrall for the first time since 2019. Mississippi State also entered at No. 24 after erasing a 16-point deficit to beat South Carolina. Texas A&M cratered from No. 9 to No. 23 after losing at home to unranked Kentucky. The conference still owns ten spots: Texas, Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Missouri, Florida, Texas A&M, Mississippi State. Depth this thick forces the committee and the voters to keep stacking SEC logos even when one of them takes a home loss.

Ten Teams Is the Real Ranking

The Big Ten put seven on the board. The Big 12 has four. The ACC three. Notre Dame sits alone as the independent. When the SEC loads ten, every non-conference win outside the league starts looking thinner and every intra-conference result carries heavier weight. Ole Miss already owns the Louisville win from earlier and now the LSU scalp in a true Top-10 meeting, the first both-teams Top-10 clash between these programs since 1962. Back-to-back wins over LSU for the first time since 2008-09 matter because the schedule does not ease up.

Texas at Tennessee is next on the national stage. Iowa at Michigan. Missouri at Mississippi State. Oregon at USC. The ranked-versus-ranked slate is thick enough that the poll will keep moving, but the SEC’s floor is what separates this year from ordinary ones. Alabama climbed to No. 8. Tennessee sits at 14. Missouri at 19. The teams that fell still occupy real estate that other conferences cannot touch.

I am not buying the idea that one Oxford night equals a finished product. Golding said the quiet part out loud: the goal was never a single win over the former coach. Chambliss is the mechanism that makes the next three weeks dangerous. Florida has to slow a quarterback Kiffin already labeled the hardest to defend in the country. If Lacy’s shoulder limits the run game, the passing volume stays high and the red-zone efficiency has to hold. Ole Miss went 5-for-5 there against LSU. That travels.

The poll crowned the conference more than it crowned any single roster. Ten teams in September is the statement. Ole Miss at No. 4 is simply the clearest proof of concept after a 32-24 night that refused to break when the lead disappeared. The voters moved them four spots because the tape and the box score left no other clean option. The rest of the league is still loaded behind them. That is the ranking that actually decides January.
