Vote for Monroe County Region Athlete of Week Feb. 23-March 1 (The Ry-Guy Take)

The scoreboard lights up, and my adrenaline spikes. We’re talking thrill of victory, agony of defeat – the whole nine yards. Monroe County’s high school athletes are bringing the heat. 43,000 votes for Athlete of the Week? The community is all in.

Maggie Smith, Milan’s bowling sensation, is on fire. She dominated the Division 3 state individual finals and led her team to a championship. Clutch doesn’t even begin to describe it. Hunter Wyszynski, New Boston Huron’s bowling star, also took top honors and helped his team win it all. These two are unstoppable.

But bowling’s not the only game in town. Jordan Godfrey, Flat Rock’s basketball phenom, is a force to be reckoned with. He nailed a key 3-pointer and dropped 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals in a District win. That’s a stat line that’ll make any coach smile. Madleen Hussein, Flat Rock’s girls basketball star, went out with a bang on Senior Night – 35 points and 7 rebounds.

And then there’s wrestling. Rocco Redmon, Dundee’s sensation, is a beast. He pinned his way to a state title and helped his team win their ninth consecutive championship. Dominance personified.

Now, let’s talk Vig. These athletes are making it hard to bet against them. Maggie Smith and Hunter Wyszynski are on fire – who wouldn’t want to put their money on them? The odds are in their favor, and the payout could be huge.

It’s not just about the athletes, though. It’s about the love of the game. They’re playing for their teams, schools, and communities. That’s what makes high school sports so special. So, as we wrap up this Athlete of the Week segment, I’ve got one thing to say: these kids are the real deal.
