Lena Bilic tore her ACL in practice, and UCLA’s title defense just lost the player Cori Close needed most after the stars walked out the door.
The school made it official Sunday, October 4. Season over. No mechanism released. No timeline beyond the bare fact that the 6-foot-3 sophomore guard/forward from Zagreb will miss all of 2026-27. Exhibition against Cal sits on October 14. Regular-season opener against Lehigh lands November 2. Bilic will be in a brace for both.
People will reach for the freshman box score and try to shrink this. Three points a night. 1.4 rebounds. 12.1 minutes across 33 games on a 37-1 juggernaut. I hear that argument. It is lazy. Bilic was never the story of last year’s championship. She was the bridge to this one. And the bridge just collapsed.
The 3.0 Points Never Told the Truth
Look at what she actually did when the minutes opened. Fourteen points and six rebounds against Southern on November 23, four threes in the mix. Thirteen against Oregon in the Big Ten opener, five-of-eleven from the field. Three double-digit nights as a true freshman adjusting to a loaded roster that featured multiple first-round WNBA talents. Thirteen steals. Nine blocks. Twenty-one assists. A clean 0.2 turnovers per game. That is not filler. That is a 6-3 wing with size, defensive length, and enough shot-making to punish rotations.
Cori Close did not treat her like a deep bench piece. Upon signing her out of Croatia, Close called her the best player out of Europe in her class and praised the IQ and defense. After the title run, with the top six scorers gone to the draft and graduation, Bilic sat among the handful of scholarship returners expected to absorb starter minutes. Sienna Betts. Christina Karamouzi. Amanda Muse. And Bilic. That was the continuity list. Now it is shorter by one critical body.
“We are devastated for Lena,” Close said in the official release. “She is such an important part of what we do here, and I know she’ll continue to be impactful for us through her recovery. We’ll be with Lena every step of the way, and she’s in great hands with the best medical staff in the country, so I know she will come out on the other side stronger and better.”
Read that again. “Important part of what we do here.” Not “nice energy off the bench.” Close is telling you the role had already grown in her mind. Insiders called the news crushing for exactly that reason. The prior day she had been talking breakthrough sophomore year. Then the knee went.
Championship Programs Do Not Get to Shrug This Off
UCLA did not merely win a title last April. The Bruins finished 37-1, ran the Big Ten undefeated, and beat South Carolina 79-51 in Phoenix for the program’s first NCAA championship. That kind of season creates a standard. It also creates a vacuum when the talent exits. Lauren Betts, Kiki Rice, Gabriela Jaquez and the rest took their production to the next level. The transfer class can stock the roster. It cannot manufacture the chemistry of a kid who already lived inside Close’s system for a full championship year.
I am not grading Bilic as a finished star. I am grading the timing. Defending a national title with heavy roster turnover already ranks among the hardest assignments in the sport. Losing a projected starter-caliber returner to an ACL before the first exhibition turns hard into negligent depth. The medical staff will do its job. The transfers will compete. None of that restores the one returning piece who had already proven she could splash threes in conference play and guard multiple positions at 6-3.
Legacy sits on the table now. Close built something historic. The question for 2026-27 is whether the program can still look like a champion when the continuity pieces keep disappearing. Bilic’s recovery becomes a two-year arc. The title defense becomes a one-year stress test with one fewer answer on the wing.
The Bruins will take the floor November 2 without her. Every early possession that needs a versatile forward who already knows the scouting report will announce the cost. That cost is not three points a night. It is the difference between replacing production and replacing trust.
