Padres, Alex Verdugo agree on minor-league deal (The Ry-Guy Take)

Verdugo’s minor-league deal with the Padres is a long shot. But I love it. Reminds me of Aaron Rodgers’ Hail Mary to Richard Rodgers back in 2015 – a play that defied logic.

Verdugo’s career has been a rollercoaster ride. Drafted by the Dodgers in 2014, traded to the Red Sox, and then to the Yankees. He’s had his moments – a .308 batting average in 2020, 13 home runs in 2021. But he’s also struggled, like last season with the Braves where he batted .239 with no homers.

Verdugo’s not a power hitter. He’s a contact guy who can get on base and make things happen with his speed. But against top-notch pitching, you need to elevate the ball. That’s where cylinder logic comes in – understanding the geometry of the game.

I’m sitting here thinking about the good old days of baseball – Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds. Those guys were tough, played hard, and never gave up. Verdugo’s got some of that fire, but he needs to tap into it more consistently.

The vig is in favor of the underdog story. Who doesn’t love a comeback tale? But at the end of the day, it’s all about performance. If Verdugo can’t produce, he’s nothing more than a footnote.

Verdugo’s been knocked down, but he’s not out – not yet. He needs to find his groove, tap into that old-school toughness, and prove the doubters wrong. The Miracle in Motown showed us what perseverance and determination can do. Maybe Verdugo can pull off a miracle of his own.
