Our NFL offseason trade grades: Did the Bills give up too much for DJ Moore?

I’m The Ry-Guy and I’ve been reffing games and calling out bullshit on football fields across Wisconsin since the days when Brett Favre was slinging touchdowns at Lambeau – back before “legal tampering” periods, before analytics nerds like Seth Walder started grading every single transaction as if it were a term paper. Back then you either won or you lost. You either had heart or you didn’t. That’s the winner’s tax – and DJ Moore? Brother, let’s talk about why this deal is one of the biggest Fox River Frauds I’ve seen in years.

First off: The Bills gave up way too much for a guy who’s been coasting on reputation alone ever since he left Carolina. Look, I get it – you got an all-world QB like Josh Allen and you need to surround him with weapons. But when your WR corps is so thin that you’re overpaying for a guy who’s been mailing it in since 2023? That’s not “addressing a weakness” – that’s desperation. And as my old pal from Mukwonago used to say, desperate teams do dumb things.

Let’s break this down step by step, because I want everyone reading this to understand exactly why this is such a disaster for the Bills and why Seth Walder giving them a D is being too generous if you ask me:

1. The Compensation
– The Bears received: A 2026 second-round pick.
– The Bills received: DJ Moore, plus a 2026 fifth-round pick.

On paper, that seems like a reasonable swap – trading down 30 spots in the draft to get your guy. But here’s what nobody’s talking about: That second-rounder could’ve been used to draft a player who actually wants to be there. A player with some goddamn pride! Instead, they’re getting a guy who’s been “clocking out” ever since he got paid.

Remember when Moore was in Carolina running routes for Teddy Bridgewater? Dude was giving 110% on every play – fighting for every yard like his life depended on it. Now? He’s coasting. And I don’t need some fancy ESPN metric to tell me that. I see it with my own two eyes!

2. The Contract
– Moore is set to make $24.5 million in cash this year.
– His 2027 salary ($15.5M) and 2028 salary ($15.5M) are fully guaranteed.

Are you kidding me? That’s not a contract – that’s a hostage situation! The Bills are on the hook for nearly $40 million over the next two years, all for a guy who’s been regressing since 2023!

And let’s talk about those “guarantees” for a second. What kind of message does it send to the locker room when you’re guaranteeing tens of millions to a guy who’s been dogging it? It tells them that as long as you put up numbers in one good season, you can coast for the rest of your career. That’s not how you build a winner!

3. The Fit
– The Bills’ offense is built around Josh Allen’s arm strength and willingness to push the ball downfield.
– Moore’s best trait is his ability to gain separation on intermediate routes.

In theory, that should work – a receiver who can get open quickly paired with a QB who can deliver the ball accurately. But here’s the problem: When was the last time you saw Moore actually fight for a contested catch? When was the last time he made a play that required some heart?

Josh Allen plays like his hair’s on fire every Sunday. He needs guys around him who match that intensity – not someone who’s going to short-arm a pass because he doesn’t want to get hit.

4. The Opportunity Cost
– The Bills could have signed any number of free agents (Mike Evans, Alec Pierce, etc.) without giving up draft capital.
– They chose instead to trade for a player whose attitude and effort are questionable at best.

This is where the Fox River Fraud comes in. Brandon Beane talked a big game last year about not overpaying for receivers – and now he’s doing exactly that! It’s hypocritical, it’s short-sighted, and it reeks of panic.

You want to know why I’m so fired up about this? Because I’ve seen this movie before. I remember when the Packers traded away a first-round pick for a “proven” receiver who ended up being nothing more than a malcontent. It set them back years!

And that’s what’s going to happen here if the Bills don’t wake up and smell the coffee. You can’t build a winner by rewarding guys who don’t give a damn.

Now, let me address some of the counterarguments I’m sure are being thrown around in bars across Buffalo right now:

“But Moore had 1.3 yards per route run in his last season!”

So what? Yards per route run is one of those stats that sounds impressive until you realize it doesn’t measure heart, effort, or accountability. DJ Moore could have all the yards per route run in the world – if he’s not giving 100% on every play, he’s not worth a damn to me.

“The Bills needed to make a splash!”

Since when is making a “splash” more important than building a winner? You don’t win championships by overpaying for guys who don’t care. You win by surrounding your star players with other stars – and by that I mean players who have the heart of a champion.

“Moore played well under Joe Brady in Carolina!”

So did a lot of receivers! That doesn’t mean he’s going to magically rediscover his work ethic just because they’re reunited. If anything, it gives him another excuse to coast – “oh look at me, I’m back with my old coach!”

Look, I’m not saying DJ Moore is untalented. He’s got the physical tools to be one of the best receivers in the league. But until he decides to start playing like it – until he starts giving a damn on every single snap – he’s nothing more than dead weight on this Bills team.

And that brings me to my final point: The winner’s tax. You either pay it or you don’t. There’s no in-between. And right now, the Bills are trying to win without paying that tax. They’re trying to buy their way out of accountability – and that never works.

I’ve been around this game long enough to know that championships are won by players who hate losing more than they love winning. Players who would rather die than let their teammates down. DJ Moore isn’t one of those guys – not anymore, at least.

So yes, the Bills gave up too much for him. And if they don’t figure out a way to light a fire under his ass? This trade is going to go down as one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history. Mark my words.

But hey, that’s just me – The Ry-Guy from Mukwonago, WI. I’ve been calling bullshit for 20 years and I’m not about to stop now. If you want to win a championship, you better be ready to pay the winner’s tax. Anything less is just a Fox River Fraud.

And with that, I’m heading down to Kwik Trip to grab some snacks before Blake’s baseball game tonight. Maybe I’ll see you there – and if you do, let me know what you think about this DJ Moore deal. I’m always up for a good debate!

Until next time, stay sharp out there. And remember: No excuses, play like a champion!

One-Ry Out.
