Oklahoma State Drowns Oregon's Title Hopes in Theta Pond

Oklahoma State ended a 21-game FBS skid by torching No. 6 Oregon 39-31. Mestemaker’s 426 yards and a goal post in Theta Pond just rewrote the Ducks’ season.

The preseason No. 2 just got dragged into Theta Pond with its own goal post, and I am not ready to pretend this was some cute early-season fluke.

Oklahoma State beat No. 6 Oregon 39-31 in Stillwater on Saturday. The Cowboys were 23-and-a-half-point underdogs. They had lost 21 straight against FBS teams. One year ago to the week, these same Ducks dropped 69-3 on them in Eugene. Eric Morris was 0-1 as the new head coach after a 1-11 funeral for the Mike Gundy era. The roster was basically a transfer portal garage sale, 91 new faces, and the whole thing still smelled like last season’s wreckage.

Then Drew Mestemaker put 426 total yards on Oregon’s head and the west goal post went for a swim.

I watched a team that was supposed to be national-title adjacent get outgained 554 to 281. Twenty-five first downs to twelve. Nearly 37 minutes of possession to 23. Oregon finished with 90 rushing yards. Ninety. On the road against a program that lost to Tulsa seven days earlier. Dan Lanning can dress it up however he wants. The tape already filed the report.

Oregon Brought the Resume. Stillwater Brought the Violence.

Mestemaker threw for 317 and two scores, ran for 109 and another, and bounced back from a messy opener like a guy who already knew Morris’s system from North Texas. Caleb Hawkins added 110 on the ground. Wyatt Young cooked for 121 and a 52-yard touchdown. Sam Keltner went 4-for-4 on field goals like the whole night was a kicking clinic with fireworks attached.

Oregon took a 31-30 lead early in the fourth on Dante Moore to Evan Stewart. That was the Ducks’ big moment. Mestemaker answered with a 75-yard drive and launched himself over a defender on a 10-yard score that put Oklahoma State back up 36-31.

“I saw him going low right when I jumped and I was like, ‘Oh, this is perfect,’ and I felt like I was in the air for a year and then I hit the ground so hard, but it’s all good because I was in the end zone,” Mestemaker said. “I got the wind knocked out of me so bad, I got up and wanted to celebrate and then couldn’t breathe. I didn’t want the guys to come jump on me so I said, ‘Just give me a second.’”

That is the energy. Wind knocked out, still in the paint, telling the pile to wait. Moore finished 14-of-21 for 191. Pedestrian. Senior year he stayed for. The defense that was supposed to travel got gashed for 237 on the ground and spent the night living off tipped-ball interceptions just to keep the score from turning into a different kind of embarrassment.

Lanning knew it. “The score was closer than it really was because it wasn’t close in a lot of ways. We got our ass kicked in a lot of areas. Tons of credit to coach Morris and his staff. If it wasn’t for the takeaways we had on defense, it doesn’t even looked like it looked.”

He said the quiet part. The takeaways were the life raft. Without them, this is a different font size on the final.

Morris Did Not Inherit Aura. He Built a One-Week War.

Morris did not soft-soap the week. He told them they were bad. After a year of hearing how good the brand used to be, the new coach ran unpleasant meetings and demanded actual intensity.

“We challenged (our players) this week in a really tough way and tough manner and we had some meetings that weren’t very pleasant in here,” Morris said. “And they had to listen to how bad they were after hearing how good they were for such a long time. To see them practice this last week, the intensity, the focus, the effort they had … for them to have that moment, for me as a coach, that’s what’s rewarding for me.”

That is coaching with the gloves off. No corporate speak. No “process.” He lit the roster up, they practiced angry, and then they put 554 yards on a top-10 team that entered the night as a three-touchdown favorite. Morris even floated the retirement joke afterward: he does not know if he can top it. He will not retire. But the man understood the size of the scalp.

Fans waited out a 90-minute rain delay, then stormed the field, ripped the goal post, carried it to Theta Pond, and threw it in while the stadium blasted Oregon’s own “Shout.” Someone stole Mestemaker’s helmet. Cops had to walk him through the chaos for an interview. First true stunner of 2026, and it came with aquatic hardware.

I know the pushback is already typing. Oregon looked shaky against Boise State. Road game. Weather. Early September noise. Save it. A 23.5-point favorite does not get outgained by 273 yards and lose its 12-game road winning streak because of humidity. Lanning’s Ducks had been living off the preseason perfume. Stillwater just aired the room out.

The Ducks Are on the Clock. The Cowboys Already Cashed.

This snaps more than a losing streak. Oklahoma State becomes the first FBS team in the modern tracking window to end a double-digit skid by taking down an AP top-10 opponent. Home opener win No. 31 in a row for the Cowboys. First home win over a non-conference top-10 side in the recent memory of anyone still holding a ticket stub. Morris has his signature win before the leaves turn. Mestemaker has the leap clip that will live on every Cowboys feed until December.

Oregon drops to 1-1 with a massive hole in the national-title spreadsheet. The Ducks still have the talent. They still have the resources. What they do not have, after Saturday, is the aura. You do not absorb 554 yards in Stillwater from a rebuild and walk into the next ranked test looking clean. Every scout on the schedule just circled the same film cut-ups.

The goal post is in the pond. The helmet is gone. The 69-3 revenge tour is already framed. Oklahoma State chose violence with a roster full of strangers and a coach who told them the truth in a room that was not fun. Oregon brought the ranking and left the hardware.

I am done treating the Ducks like October destiny until they prove they can punch back when the script burns. Stillwater already kept the receipt.
