Giannis Antetokounmpo needed 14 minutes in Quebec City to turn a preseason opener into a living argument about what the Heat actually acquired this summer.
Nine points. Four rebounds. Seven assists. Perfect from the field. And every one of those seven dimes became a made three, which means he directly created 30 points before the starters sat for the second half. Miami beat Toronto 129-105 at Centre Vidéotron in the first NBA game Quebec City has ever hosted, a sellout of 18,474, and the box score that matters is the one that shows a two-time MVP already running the offense like he has been here for years.
The counter sits right there and deserves airtime. This was October 3 preseason. Kawhi Leonard sat for the Raptors. The Heat finished with 25 turnovers. Spoelstra himself called pieces of it sloppy and said he only wanted feet wet after a delayed arrival into town near 1 a.m. Fourteen efficient minutes against a short-handed Toronto group do not hand out banners. Fair. The answer lives in the same half: 3-of-3 shooting, 3-of-4 from the line, and those seven kick-outs landing on shooters who were already open because the paint collapsed the second he put the ball on the floor.
Spoelstra Reached for Magic on Night One
After the game Spoelstra did not hedge. He talked about the size, the vision, and the ability to put the ball on the numbers to shooters. Then he went all the way: Pat Riley was at practice all week, and the way Giannis played with the ball in his hands reminded all of them of a great big point guard that played for Pat back in the ’80s.
That comparison is franchise language. Riley’s Lakers. The big who ran the break and found the corners. Spoelstra has faced Giannis in the playoffs three times and still sounded freshly stunned by the daily version. “When you really see it every day in practice this week, you appreciate how brilliant of a playmaker that he can be.”
Pelle Larsson, who caught some of those kick-outs, kept it simpler. “He’s an incredible passer. He makes the right play every time, driving, kicking out to wide-open shooters. So he’s very easy to play with.” Andrew Wiggins felt the physics in real time: “Giannis, his gravitational pull in that paint, it’s crazy.”
I trust the quotes because the assist total backs them. Seven made threes off his passes in a half is not chemistry theater. It is the reason Klay Thompson and Wiggins exist on this roster. Help collapses, the corner opens, the ball is already there.
The Haul Debate Now Has Film
Milwaukee walked away with Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 pick, unprotected firsts in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round swap, and a 2033 second. That is real future value. Miami walked into Quebec City with Giannis and Bobby Portis and a first-half lead that hit 76-55. Last season Giannis still put up 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists in 36 games before the trade talk swallowed everything. The Heat went 43-39 and missed the playoffs. One clean half does not rewrite the East. It does move the ceiling conversation from theoretical to immediate.
The starters together outscored Toronto 34-29 in a little over 12 minutes. Wiggins hit four threes. Hardaway Jr. went perfect. Bam Adebayo shared the floor with a player who can initiate instead of only finish. Spoelstra said he was encouraged. The pace produced the turnovers. The vision produced the threes. Only one of those two things requires weeks of cleaning up.
Giannis had not played an NBA game since March 15. He landed in a new system, a new city, a new country for the night, and still delivered the exact playmaking Spoelstra spent the week raving about in front of Riley. The regular season is still weeks away. The Magic comparison is already on the record. The next five preseason games will tighten the edges. The question that travels out of Quebec City is simpler and louder: how many nights does this version of Giannis turn Bam, Klay, and Wiggins into the supporting cast of a real contender.
