Anthony Edwards Roasts LeBron Hairline and Claims the Mic

Edwards used his AE3 launch ad to jab LeBron’s free-agency snub, Brown’s hair product, and half the league—proof the Timberwolves star now runs his own show.

Anthony Edwards looked into an Adidas camera, dropped a laugh track under a fake talk show called Minnatlantasota, and told the league LeBron James picked Philly for the barbers. I watched the whole two-minute, twelve-second spot the morning it hit, and I am telling you the hairline joke is the part that sticks.

He did not flinch. “You see where big dog ended up? He was gonna join me in Minnesota, but I guess his knees couldn’t handle the cold weather. It’s cool though. We know why he really made that decision. Philly’s got some of the best barbers in the world.” Then he dragged Jaylen Brown into the same sentence: “Between him and the old boy from Boston, they’re gonna have a whole lot of enhancements going on in the locker room.” He even soft-pedaled it with “I’m just playing, ya’ll. No pun intended,” which only made the cut cleaner.

This is a 25-year-old signature athlete treating a 41-year-old four-time champion like a late-night monologue guest. The Cold Blooded Anthony Edwards 3 drops for $130 and the creative brief is pure Ant: no filter, no corporate choke collar, full Twin Cities swagger with Atlanta baked into the name.

The Minnesota Snub Still Has Teeth

LeBron signed with the 76ers on July 24 after what Rich Paul called an emotional roller coaster. Minnesota was in that conversation. Everybody knows it. Edwards just said the quiet part with a studio audience and a shoe to sell.

I keep coming back to the cold-weather line. Knees. Minnesota. The whole franchise that spent the summer chasing the biggest free agent left on the board just got turned into a punch line by its own franchise player. That is not residual bitterness dressed up as comedy. That is ownership. Ant is telling you the Timberwolves are his show now, and the king who passed on the invitation gets roasted on the way out.

Adidas signed him back in December 2020. Six years later they are letting him host a monthly roast series. The cage is open and the dog is unleashed, he says. Believe that. The brand is betting the personality moves product the same way the dunks do, and after last season’s 28.8 points a night on nearly 49 percent shooting, they have the receipts.

Everybody Gets It, Even the Dads

He did not stop at LeBron. LaMelo Ball is his new twin in the Twin Cities after the trade from Charlotte, and Edwards welcomed him by saying they have been working out together but “one thing we ain’t doing is carpooling if he driving.” That is a February accident reference delivered like a sibling roast at Thanksgiving. Then he swung at Jalen Brunson and the Knicks bench: anybody on the court can get it, “even your daddy… if he your assistant coach.” Karl-Anthony Towns gets a championship shoutout in the same breath. The range is the point. Ant is not picking one rival. He is clearing the room.

I like the Brunson bit the most for pure chaos. Rick Brunson is on the Knicks staff. The son is one of the toughest covers in the East. Edwards just put the whole family on notice inside a sneaker commercial. That is how you announce you are done being the young guy who waits his turn.

The closer is the teaser that matters. “When I lace these up, it’s over for all y’all. Especially you know who.” Speculators are pointing at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Victor Wembanyama. I am circling January 16 instead. Minnesota versus Philadelphia. Edwards versus the guy who chose the barbers. That date already has heat. The ad just turned the thermostat up.

The Throne Does Not Get a Grace Period

LeBron is 41 and still the gravity well of every room he walks into. Edwards is 25 and already acting like the next man up has arrived early. The Olympics teammate energy, the mutual respect, the “I’m just playing” disclaimer, none of it softens the message. You passed on Minnesota. Your knees, the weather, the barbers, the enhancements, all of it is fair game now.

I have watched enough of these succession moments to know the league does not hand you the mic. You grab it and start talking. Edwards grabbed it on a Thursday in September with a laugh track and a $130 shoe. The Timberwolves get a star who treats the entire NBA like open-mic night. Philly gets a reminder that the summer decision still has a punch line attached. And I get a regular season that already feels personal before the first tip.

January 16 is circled. The AE3 is laced. The dog is off the leash. Everything else is just waiting for the next episode.
