Packers -6 Still Holds After Penix Starter Move

Packers -6 Still Holds After Penix Starter Move AI-generated image

Penix’s return shaved a point off the Packers’ spread, but rust, road history and Atlanta’s 16-point start still make Green Bay -6 the sharper TNF side.

The market moved a full point for Michael Penix Jr. and I still do not trust Atlanta enough to lay the points at Lambeau. Packers -6 is the side.

Penix gets the start Thursday night after missing the first two weeks recovering from a partially torn left ACL. That is his third ACL surgery. The Falcons opened as seven-point dogs, then the number slid to six once the team made it official. DraftKings and others settled around Packers -6 with a total near 43.5. That is the wrong amount of respect for a quarterback who has not played a real snap since Week 11 of 2025.

Atlanta scored 16 total points in two games with Cooper Rush and then Jack Strand. Zero red-zone appearances. Six-of-25 on third downs. Five turnovers. The worst EPA per play in the league. Bijan Robinson can only do so much when the offense never reaches the painted area. Penix is an upgrade over that disaster, sure. An upgrade from the basement is still the basement until he proves otherwise on the road in September.

The Rust Tax at Lambeau Is Real

Tommy Rees has been selling the progress hard. The offensive coordinator said Penix “looks sharp, moving well” and that “his arm talents is easily seen.” Rees added that Penix has “moved in the pocket” and “gotten outside of the pocket” with “really” few limitations over the last few weeks. Fine. Practice praise is cheap. Game speed against a Packers front that just took an OT win is not.

Penix himself kept the door cracked earlier. He told the coaches he was “not where I want to be right now” and wanted to be “100% so I can help the team win football games.” He kept repeating he was “really close.” Close is not ready for a Thursday night opener at Lambeau against a defense that already owns two ATS losses but still gets to play at home without the same offensive black hole Atlanta has lived in.

Last season Penix went 3-6 in nine starts. He completed 60.1 percent for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions. Serviceable. Not a world-beater. And those numbers came with more continuity than a guy stepping in after reconstructive surgery and two weeks of watching the offense put up eight points a game. The historical note that his completion percentage drops outdoors and on the road matters here. Lambeau in late September is not a controlled dome.

Green Bay sits 1-1 and 0-2 against the spread. They are missing Josh Jacobs to suspension and Micah Parsons to knee issues. Their own run game has been anemic, 63 and 66 yards in the first two weeks. That should open the door for Atlanta. It does not open it wide enough for me to take the points with a quarterback whose last meaningful snap ended with a surgeon.

One Point Is Not Enough Insurance

The half-point or full-point shift after the starter announcement is the classic market overreaction to a name instead of a body of work. Penix gives the Falcons a real chance to move the ball more than Rush or Strand did. That does not mean they suddenly hang 24 at Lambeau. Atlanta is still 0-2 on the season and already looking at a long climb. An upset would change the temperature around the franchise, but the betting number has to price the actual gap, not the hope.

I am not buying the Falcons moneyline at plus money either. The juice on Packers -6 is steep, but the number itself is the play. Green Bay’s defense gets to pin a rusty quarterback in a hostile environment on a short week. Atlanta’s offensive line has not protected anyone well enough to trust a guy working back from his third knee reconstruction. The total sitting in the low 44s also feels right; neither team has shown it can sustain drives.

Penix may eventually be the best option Atlanta has, especially with Tua Tagovailoa unavailable early. That future starts Thursday. My money does not care about the future. It cares about the first series at Lambeau when the pack is loud and the knee has to hold up under real heat. Packers by more than a touchdown feels like the cleaner read than fading a home favorite that already has the Falcons’ number built in.

The line moved because the name changed. The tape from the first two weeks and the medical timeline still say the same thing. Take the points with Green Bay and let Penix prove the rust is gone before you ever circle Atlanta plus the number again.
