The laugh is the tell. Not the 41-7 score, not the four turnovers, not even the pregame clip of Colorado players bagging on a temporary stadium that “sounds like a fucking library.” The laugh is what got people cut. Deion Sanders walked into that locker room corridor Saturday night, heard joy after a beatdown at Northwestern, and decided the 2025 version of himself was finished.
I am all the way here for it.
Sanders said it plain on Saturday: “I don’t understand how in the world you can find joy, or you can find a laughing matter when I’m right behind you walking [into the locker room]. I don’t understand that, and I addressed it, and I’m going to put my foot in it, not on it.” By Tuesday he had followed through. A few guys are no longer on the team. Conduct detrimental. Colorado’s athletic department is still finalizing the roster and will release an updated list later in the week, but the coach already drew the line in public. That is the whole story.
Last Year’s Softness Built This Blowout
He owned the real reason without flinching. “It’s never one [thing],” Sanders said Tuesday. “I’m one the most loving and giving and forgiving men you could ever meet, but when you start [having] conduct detrimental to the team, you don’t care about the team, you care about you, I have a problem with that. A year ago, I didn’t put my foot down in it enough. It lingered a little bit. Then, it imploded. I’m not doing that anymore.”
That 3-9 season after the 9-4 high of 2024 was the lingering. You can feel the hangover in every number from Evanston. Colorado managed 348 total yards and 18 first downs while Northwestern chewed 36:53 of possession and racked up 423 yards. Julian Lewis went 19-of-29 for 168 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his first real stress test. Four turnovers. Zero-for-three on fourth down. The Buffs’ only score was a 50-yard strike to Joseph Williams in the third quarter. Everything else was Northwestern’s game, and Aidan Chiles treated it like a clinic with three passing scores and two on the ground.
I process this like a soap opera because it is one. The 2024 Buffs sold the dream. The 2025 Buffs let the standards slip until the whole thing collapsed. Now Sanders is choosing the hard cut over another year of polite decay. Linebacker Tyler Martinez put the locker room vote on the table without romance: the dismissals are unfortunate, “but when you look at the big picture, if it’s going to help us win, we’ve got to do it.” That is the only sentence that matters inside Boulder right now.
The Library Clip Was the Warning Shot
Safety Ben Finneseth stood up Tuesday and ate the pregame video. “It was childish,” he said. “It was a stupid thing that I said. It won’t happen again. The way I handled it was horrible and I promise you guys that it will not happen again.” Sanders called the comments foolishness and made a point of showing respect to Northwestern. Good. You do not stroll into somebody else’s temporary 12,000-seat setup, call it a library, then lose by five scores and expect the culture to hold.
The viral clip was not the dismissal trigger by itself. Sanders made that clear. Pattern of me-first behavior was. Still, the optics were a gift to every Big 12 opponent that already had Colorado circled. You talk that way and then get held to 23:07 of possession, you have volunteered for the next three months of bulletin-board material. Finneseth’s apology is the first public receipt that the room heard the coach. The cuts are the second.
I keep a running ledger on coaches who preach standards and then blink when the depth chart gets thin. Sanders blinked in 2025. He is not blinking now. Fourth year in Boulder. Two-and-one record. Big 12 openers do not care about your vibes. Baylor on Saturday is the first real exam of whether this purge lands as leadership or panic.
Colorado can still salvage the season if the remaining roster treats the Northwestern tape like a crime scene instead of a bad Saturday. The talent is not the question. The habits are. When Sanders says he will put his foot in it, not on it, he is telling every remaining Buffalo the same thing he told the ones who left: the laugh after a loss is the last thing he will tolerate. The updated roster drops this week. Then the only score that matters is the one in Waco.
