The Tigers staggered through 2026 at 30-28 overall and 9-21 in the SEC, missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. Johnson kept his staff intact after that free-fall. On the retention decision he was direct: “They’ve earned that opportunity.” He followed it with the only standard that matters heading into this draw: “And as I’ve said, we all need to improve our performance from this year. And I’m confident that group will do that.” Those lines now sit next to a schedule that tests every part of the claim.
Five Home Series, Zero Soft Landings
The SEC format gives every team ten three-game series, two permanent rivals and eight rotating opponents. LSU’s 2027 home half is Texas, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Mississippi State. Road gets Florida, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Kentucky. That is not a balanced draw. It is a concentration of programs that live in the postseason conversation every spring.
I keep landing on the same number the athletic department itself flagged: LSU will play 31 of its 56 regular-season games against teams that reached the 2026 NCAA Tournament. More than half the schedule. The non-conference side starts February 19 at home with a Long Island doubleheader, stays in Baton Rouge through the rest of the month, then hits Tulane and the Live Like Lou Las Vegas Classic against Oregon State, Arizona State, and Iowa. Those early tests matter, but they are warm-ups. The real exam opens when Texas walks into Alex Box in mid-March and does not leave until the Mississippi State series in mid-May.
Series baseball rewards depth and night-to-night consistency more than any other college sport. One short bullpen outing or one cold lineup turns a weekend into an 0-3. LSU just scheduled five of those weekends against brands that know how to finish series. Georgia arrives with recent tournament hardware. Texas comes off a deep 2026 run. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt still own the pedigree. Mississippi State closes the home slate and never makes anything easy in May.
