The public is dumping 97 percent of the tickets on New Mexico State and the line is still sprinting the other way. That is not noise. That is the market telling you your dog ticket is already dead.
Florida State opened a few points lighter than where it sits now. Full game is sitting near -31.5. The books keep taking the Aggies money and moving the number against them anyway. I have seen this movie. The square side gets loud. The smart side gets quiet and gets paid.
I am not touching the full game. I am hammering the first half.
Hot Seat Coaches Do Not Ease Off Early
Mike Norvell is 38-34 in Tallahassee and coming off back-to-back losing seasons. That is not a soft landing. That is a man who needs a statement before SMU shows up in Week 1. You do not build mental toughness by dinking around for three quarters against the worst rushing offense in the FBS.
New Mexico State averaged 77.3 rushing yards a game last year on 2.6 yards per carry. Their new quarterback, Trey Hedden, ate 119 pressures in 419 attempts at Furman. David Yost’s offense finished bottom-five in Rushing Success Rate and Offensive Line Yards. This is not a unit that is going to slow the game down and steal clock. This is a unit that is going to get punched in the mouth and hand Ashton Daniels short fields.
Collin Wilson put it clean at Action Network: “The expectation is for Ashton Daniels and the Florida State offense to name their score by halftime. A vanilla second half can be expected with conference rival SMU visiting in Week 1.” That is the whole bet. Score early. Cover the half. Sit the starters. Protect the bodies for real football next week.
Wilson also noted Norvell’s recent openers produced first-half team totals of 17 and 14 against Alabama and Georgia Tech. Those were actual opponents. This is New Mexico State in Week 0 at Doak. The number is 17.5 for a reason, and I still like it.
The Bully Spot Is the Entire Point
Action Network’s Duck did not bury the lede: “Absolute must-have spot for Florida state here. Florida State absolutely needs to secure feel good win and I think we see Norvell keep the throttle down.” He pointed to last year’s first halves against East Texas A&M and Kent State where FSU dropped 49 and 45 before halftime and kept the foot down. They are 6-1 ATS laying 30-plus over the last five years in those bully spots.
I know what you are about to type. Daniels looked lost at Auburn. The power ratings hate this number. VSiN flagged New Mexico State +31.5 as the biggest discrepancy on the Week 0 board because the market is higher than the ratings on Daniels. Fine. Fade the full game if you need the moral victory. I am not here for moral victories. I am here for the half where the hot-seat coach still has something to prove and the Group of 5 guest cannot run the football.
Traditional media will spend the next 48 hours talking about “statistically speaking” and Daniels’ completion percentage from last fall. Skip the glazing. This is a mismatch with a built-in second-half script. The first half is where the money lives.
Linebacker Mikai Gbayor and receiver Jayvan Boggs are both available. The defense should generate havoc plays. Daniels gets clean looks. Norvell gets the feel-good lead he needs before he goes vanilla. That is the sequence.
I am on Florida State first half -17.5. The juice is ugly at some shops and I do not care. The public is already cooked on the full-game dog. Let them keep firing. I will take the half where the Seminoles still have a reason to choose violence.
The number opened light, the tickets flooded the wrong side, and the first half is still sitting there waiting. Saturday night in Tallahassee is going to look exactly like every other Week 0 bully job until the backups come in. Bet the part that actually matters.
